MONDAY EVENING 6-9 PM HANDBUILDING CLASS WITH CHAI RAWITHIWAKUL
Learn the basics of hand building by exploring functional and sculptural works in this course! Your instructor Chai will work with you to bring your ideas to life using various techniques such as:
• slab building
• coil building
• pinch pots
• extruding
• kurinuki
• surface decoration (sgrafitto, mishima, wax resist, stamps, texture)
Some of the objects we’ll make:
• hollow animals / figures
• trays
• mugs
• and much more!
Chai, your instructor, is a potter and sculptor from Albany, CA. They have been practicing building with clay since the Spring of 2021, after joining the Ceramics Program at Laney College in an effort to regain their passion for art as well as to heal from the isolation of the pandemic. Chai has now taken up clay full-time – working at their local ceramics studio as a staff member and instructor, continuing to take classes at Laney College, going to various ceramic events, and starting a small handmade pottery business. In their spare time they go on hikes with their partner, spend hours expanding their knowledge on clay and glazes, and rewatch seasons of their favorite TTRPG show: Dimension 20
Class starts January 13th and ends February 17th.
